One homily can change a life.

When I was 14, graduating middle school in Upstate New York, our diocese held a rare mass where every graduate attended together in Yonkers.

It only happens once every few years.

I was excited mostly because my father spoke so highly of Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He had attended many of his masses before, and this felt special.

That day, Cardinal Dolan said something simple:

God is sufficient. Everything else is not important.
If you are not guided by God, it’s just not important.

At 15, I didn’t fully understand it.
But my father and I talked about that homily for years.

It stayed with us.

Fast forward to 2022.

I was at a 7AM weekday Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
At the end, an announcement was made:

“For those who wish to confess with His Eminence, you may do so now.”

I learned Cardinal Dolan quietly hears confessions some Friday mornings when his schedule allows.

I went.

During confession, I thanked him for that Yonkers homily and told him how much it meant to my father and me and guiding us all these years.

I also shared something personal:
I was praying for a wife.

His response stayed with me:

“It’s a sad time we’re living in.
Many really good men just want to meet a good woman.
Keep praying. Don’t give up.”

It was the first time I truly spoke with him. I never had the opportunity to really sit down and speak with him for a longer period of time.

May 2025

At the Path to Peace Gala in May, I shared this story with him again especially now with building Fides how much his guidance and help meant.

Not in passing.
Not as a fan.

Just as a thank-you.

He paused, listened, and hugged me.

And said how much it meant to hear that the words from so long ago had stayed with us and how good we are.

Then there was 2016.

At a public moment, Cardinal Dolan was seated between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

As a bishop DiMarzio prayed:

Cardinal Dolan gently nudged Trump.
Trump nodded in agreement.

I always wondered if that was the moment it was destined that Roe v. Wade would be overturned.

In June 2025 at the Old Cathedrals celebration of the appointment of the first American Cardinal 150 years ago, I asked him directly:

How did you convince him?

His answer was simple:

“It really wasn’t me as much as it may have looked like.
It was the rosary.
One needs to trust in our Lady. I prayed the rosary a lot”

The lesson.

My father raised us to notice saints in the Church through their:

  • depth

  • action

  • humility

  • joy

That’s what we saw in Cardinal Dolan.

Not politics.
Not power.
Prayer, faith and humility.

Again and again for many years.

Gratitude.

For New Yorkers, and the world alike he has been more than a cardinal.

He has been proof that:

  • prayer changes outcomes

  • Always believe and trust God

  • Humility: It’s not me. It’s God, I’m just the messenger.

He truly serves as a reminder of faith for those building their businesses that even when you are on such a high level dealing with people like Donald Trump, Robert Kraft, the Mayor, ect prayer is the solution. Most don’t see it but it plays such a big role in the behind the scenes in making good things happen.

I hope to see him a few more times before his departure in February.

And I hope others recognize the quiet impact he’s had not just on the Church, but on individual lives like mine as well as other young men and women in the Archdiocese.

Likewise hope we can take this in as Christmas fast approaches.

Thank you Cardinal Dolan for everything from helping a young man and all the good work you did in New York. May God bless you.
