“There was a very sweet Dominican sister creating two new classes. One was an intro to Christian Apologetics, and one was an intro to philosophy, and she was super excited, and I was excited and then registration time came, and basically no students signed up, you know. And I was talking to the students, you know, why didn't you want to take philosophy? And the main response was, you know, Mr. Tate, there are not any AP points. So that was the beginning of this. Like, this is crazy. We can't get our Catholic kids at a Catholic school to take philosophy or Christian apologetics because of the power of the College Board. “

Run Club, its meaning and the importance of the history of one’s family faith

After an early Run Club with mass, praying the rosary our run club started off on the coldest day of the year with a reflection and a mission.

“Being here today is an example of what is really important.

Giving thanks to God for the wealth and things one has gained in life thanks to him but receiving him also gives you the courage and peace to fight for what is right.”

I know I mentioned before the likes of Emperor Karl, King Baudouin, Ken Langone and some of our speakers going to daily mass as a great example.

This goes even further then just them though and this point was just reiterated to me further yesterday as I was reading deeper into the story of Cardinal Clemens August Graf Von Galen who was Hitlers most outspoken critics and was put in jail 3 times for speaking against him during WW2.

In the book I was reading when it came to his youth it said “Our Parents have always set a good example of a wholesome and convenient piety. The daily attendance of the holy Mass as well as the collective evening prayer in the chapel was obligatory for all inhabitants (Von Galen was one of 13 children and grew up in a private castle).

Ever Sunday the parents and the elder children attended high mass and listened to the sermon in the parish church. In addition to that the chapel was frequently visited. In former times the parents used to pray the rosary in the afternoon after having been for a walk. They both tended to contemplate for half an hour every day. The father prepared for the holy confession with an almost fearful diligence; he was not content with the collective evening prayer. Instead he would kneel in front of his desk in his room before bedtime and reflect on the accomplished daily task and he would examine his conscience; then he would take notes on these thoughts which were then used as a lead for self-examination before going to the confessional next Saturday and which were destroyed afterwards”.

Such is an example that goes to show how one can truly put their faith first.

This wasn’t only his immediate family. His uncle was also a cardinal and there was another religious of the family buried previously in the cathedral as well. Incredibly enough the family actually bought out the cathedrals main grave about 100 years before Clemens became a Cardinal.

To add on further he and his family were members of the nobility.

“Von Galen has always proudly held his title of nobility which to him had a “value of eternity” but at the same time he regarded the title as a duty to both church and society”.

One of his relatives mentioned even to him “One should not bury any of the talents entrusted to him” and that “everyone should work generously courageously and faithfully for the honor of the Lord and the good of our fellow men where God has placed him”.

Prayer card of Cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen

This perspective enables us to change the way we view how daily mass is actually very important as well as praying the rosary.

By taking the body of Christ on a daily basis one doesn’t only stay close to the lord receiving protection from the evil one and special graces that help them overcome their challenges but also the realization that we need to use our graces and specialities to the benefit of God and his people as a way of giving thanks to him.

God gives us a responsibility to others and if we don’t use it to do good then we can end up going down the wrong path.

Some of those who came today were exactly a product of that. A product and gift of their previous ancestors faith.

By staying close to God one’s faith and intentions can be eternal and even possibly felt by family members many years later. You may not have noticed it but if you do some research into your families history you realize just then that your own successes and things you have today could be a grace of your forefathers faith.

For those who may not have that or know of it you could be setting the seed today for yourself and your family.

That is truly the incredible thing: God doesn’t forget your devotion to him even years later.

Don’t give it up so easily and you will realize the peace and way your life changes once one starts receiving the lord on a daily basis.

This isn’t only about now but about the future.

That devotion to him has an effect that can last a lifetime even to your descendants.

By having the mental and spiritual side by going to mass with the physical side (going for a run) you can truly enable yourselves to be clear and ready to not only tackle todays problems but give up your life to the lord in the days, months and years to come.

We’re very thankful to be using the run club as a way to promote daily mass and the rosary. We’re also very thankful to each and every person who supported us today on this mission.
